American Hymn Tune Sketches

John Prescott

American Hymn Tune Sketches was commissioned by First and Calvary Presbyterian Church in Springfield, MO. in honor of Patricia Pennel, who served as organist there for many years, and it was premiered by the University/Community band of Missouri State University under the direction of Ron Bramer.  This composition makes use of two early American hymn tunes, How Firm A Foundation and Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing, to weave an exciting tapestry for band.  Complete versions of both tunes along with fragments from each are used to propel the music toward an exuberant moment during which the tow melodies appear together in combination toward the end.
