Beginners, click here for more info on starting band!

Band begins in Marshfield in the 6th grade.  Students that are interested start out on Song Flute.  This is a commitment of the entire first quarter.  During that time, students will take 5 playing tests, learn fundamentals of reading music, and will prepare for a concert with the 7th Grade Band. The concert will be October 21 at 7:00 in the JH Gym.

We will start playing our song flutes on Monday, August 18th, so get your child's flute and book right away.  The song flute and book (Belwin Pre-Instrument Method) are available at Beckerdite Music in Marshfield and at several music stores in Springfield.  In Marshfield, the song flute and book cost is $8.00, tax included.

We split the songflute class into 2 groups which meet for 47 minutes each day.  The first group meets from 11:57 - 12:46 and the second group meets from 12:51 to 1:38.  We split each of those groups in half, with part of them going with Ms. Hutton, Mr. Crowley, or Mr. Meyer.

After Band begins, woodwinds will meet with Ms. Hutton everyday, brass meets with Mr. Crowley, and percussion with Mr. Meyer.

6th Grade Band

Sixth grade band will begin on  Monday, October 27th.  Each student must secure an instrument, a wire music stand, a care-kit, and the Belwin Band Builder Book 1 (green)by that date.  Students will be play-tested prior to this date in order that each student chooses an instrument appropriate to his or her own physical characteristics.  In January, each student will need to get our 2nd book, Standard of Excellence Book 1 (red).

Woodwinds

A reminder to swab after you each time you play your instrument. Clarinets need to have 4 good reeds in their case at all times and rotate them.  Clarinets also need to clean their mouthpiece once a week.  Flutes need to keep their instrument polished.

Percussion

Students will continue with the bells, but as soon as the red book is added, they will add the snare drum.  You will then alternate bringing snares and bells.  Other percussion instruments, such as bass drum, timpani, cymbals, woodblock, triangle, tambourine, etc., will also be taught this school year.
