Jazz Band 1
The Marshfield Jazz Band 1 is an audition group which will meet during
the school day 5th hour and after school on Mondays from 4-5. This
group will consist of 5 saxophones, 4/5 trumpets, 4 trombones, 1 piano,
1 bass guitar, and 1 * 2 drumset. This jazz band will perform at two
jazz festivals, the annual jazz spring concert, the HS Christmas
Concert, JH Spring Concert, Silver Dollar City and community events as
invitations are received. Extra rehearsals and sectionals may be called
during the months of January and February to prepare for our music
festivals. Students are also encouraged to audition for District and
State Jazz Bands and attend the Combo Clinic in St. Louis and Drury Jazz
Camp in the Summer.
Jazz Band 2
The Marshfield Jazz Band 2 will be open to any student who
is interested in playing jazz. The following instruments will be allowed in
Jazz Band: saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, bass guitar, and drum set.
The rehearsals will be on Mondays after school from 5-6 in the High School Band
Room. Different jazz styles will be taught such as swing, bossa and rock, as
well as beginning improvisation. This jazz band may perform at the annual jazz
spring concert, HS Christmas concert, Silver Dollar City, and jazz festivals.
HS students will be encouraged to audition for District and State Jazz Bands and
attend the Combo Clinic in St. Louis and Drury Jazz Camp in the Summer.
Jazz Theory Class
This course provides the students the opportunity to study the concepts
involved in basic music theory. Emphasis will be given to scales, intervals,
chords, modes, other functional harmony, jazz harmony, and improvisation. The
advanced theory students will study advanced music and jazz theory, and
advanced improvisation. Also, the study of jazz history may be approached as
time allows. This class meets 1st semester and is repeatable for credit. All
students able to read music are accepted.
Jazz Combo

Jazz
Combo is an audition group which will meet after school. Instrumentation will be
composed of the rhythm section: drums, bass, piano and the winds: 2-3 players.
The
MHS Jazz Combo performs at the Pre-Festival Concert, Jazz Festivals, and the
annual Jazz Concert & Dinner. Also performances are given throughout the
community as invitations are received.
The
MHS Jazz Combo participates each year in the Jazz Combo Clinic held in the St.
Louis area. It is a Friday/Saturday event and the focus is on learning
improvisation in a combo setting.
